The Modulated Emission of the Ultraluminous X-ray Source in Ngc 3379

چکیده
We report recent Chandra observations of the ULX in the elliptical galaxy NGC 3379 that clearly detect two flux variability cycles. Comparing these data with the Chandra observation of 5 years ago, we measure a flux modulation with a period of 12.6 hr. Moreover, we find that the emission undergoes a correlated spectral modulation, becoming softer at low flux. We argue that our results establish this source as a ULX binary in NGC 3379. Given the old stellar population of this galaxy, the ULX is likely to be a soft transient; however, historical X-ray sampling suggests that the current ‘‘on’’ phase has lasted 10 yr. We discuss our results in terms of ADC and wind-feedback models. If the flux modulation is orbital, we can constrain the donor mass and orbital period at the onset of mass transfer within 1.15Y 1.4M and 12.5Y17 hr, respectively. The duration of the mass transfer phase so far is probably 1 Gyr, and the binary has been a soft X-ray transient throughout this time. These constraints are insensitive to the mass of the accretor. The X-ray Spectra of the Luminous Lmxbs in Ngc 3379: Field and Globular Cluster Sources
From a deep multi-epoch Chandra observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 3379 we report the spectral properties of eight luminous LMXBs (LX> 1.2× 1038erg s−1). We also present a set of spectral simulations, produced to aid the interpretation of low-count single-component spectral modeling. These simulations demonstrate that it is possible to infer the spectral states of X-ray binaries from thes...
متن کاملRadio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source.
The physical nature of ultraluminous x-ray sources is uncertain. Stellar-mass black holes with beamed radiation and intermediate black holes with isotropic radiation are two plausible explanations. We discovered radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 5408. The x-ray, radio, and optical fluxes as well as the x-ray spectral shape are consistent with be...
متن کاملX-ray Monitoring of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources
X-ray monitoring observations were performed with the Swift observatory of the ultraluminous Xray sources Holmberg IX X-1, NGC 5408 X-1, and NGC 4395 X-2 and also of the nuclear X-ray source in NGC 4395. Holmberg IX X-1 remains in the hard X-ray spectral state as its flux varies by a factor of 7 up to an (isotropic) luminosity of 2.8 × 10 erg s. This behavior may suggest an unusually massive co...
متن کاملNuSTAR and XMM - Newton observations of the ultraluminous X - ray source NGC 5643 X - 1
We present a high-quality hard X-ray spectrum of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5643 X-1 measured with NuSTAR in May–June 2014. We have obtained this spectrum by carefully separating the signals from the ULX and from the active nucleus of its host galaxy NGC 5643 located 0.8 arcmin away. Together with long XMM-Newton observations performed in July 2009 and August 2014, the NuSTAR data...
متن کاملA Photoionized Nebula Surrounding and Variable Optical Continuum Emission from the Ultraluminous X-ray Source in Ngc
We obtained optical spectra of the counterpart of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1 using the FORS spectrograph on the VLT. The spectra show strong high excitation emission lines, Heii λ4686 and [NeV] λ3426, indicative of X-ray photoionization. Using the measured X-ray spectrum as input to a photoionization model, we calculated the relation between the Heii and X-ray luminosities and ...
